Maurice Oteri built My Law Firm in 2013 on a straightforward idea - legal services that ordinary people can afford and understand, priced up front, explained without the performance.

A client came to Maurice on a Friday. He was settling Monday on a $650,000 purchase that shouldn’t have been worth more than about $500,000, and he knew it.
Reading the contract, Maurice found that although the finance approval date had passed, the buyer had never actually written back to waive the finance condition. Everyone had assumed the deadline alone made the contract unconditional. It didn’t.
He wrote to the seller: the condition was never waived, so we’ll be terminating, unless you settle Monday at $500,000. The seller agreed. It settled Monday.
One short meeting and a couple of hours of reading. $150,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between using a law firm and using a conveyancer?
Both can handle a standard settlement. The difference shows up when something goes wrong. A conveyancer has to refer you to a lawyer, and you start a new relationship with someone who doesn’t know your file. We’re a law firm, so it stays in-house.
What does the $990 cover?
Our conveyancing work through to settlement, including GST, plus a $440 incl. GST legal protection credit. Disbursements sit on top. Those are third party costs such as searches and government charges, and they’re not our fees.
What is the $440 legal protection credit?
It’s legal work included in your fee rather than billed separately. If you’re selling, it can go towards issuing a default notice if the buyer doesn’t perform. If you’re buying, it can go towards reviewing your contract when you enter into one.
Do I need to come into an office?
No. We work electronically and remotely. If you get stuck on any of our forms, we’ll jump on a screen share and walk you through it.
Can you act for me if I’m buying and selling at the same time?
Yes. Tell us on the form and we’ll set out how the fee works across both matters when we come back to you.
We’re separating and need a name taken off the title. Can you help?
Yes, and it’s an area we know well. my law firm is Australia’s largest provider of binding financial agreements, so if there’s a family law agreement behind the transfer, the same firm can handle both.
What happens if something goes wrong before settlement?
Something usually does. A bank delay, an issue at final inspection, a party who won’t move. Our team has seen it and stays objective. If it becomes a legal problem rather than a process problem, our lawyers take it on.
